Gainesville is the county seat of Alachua County, Florida, and the largest city in North Central Florida. Gainesville was established in 1854 and named after Edmund P. Gaines.
Gainesville was the home of Josiah T. Walls (1842-1905), a lawyer and the first Black person to be elected to Congress from Florida. He was also one of the first African Americans in the U.S. Congress (1871- 1873 and again in 1873–1876) elected during the Reconstruction Era.
Walls was also a member of the Florida Senate from the 13th district (1869–1871). He was also a member of the Florida House of Representatives from Alachua County (1868–1869). He also served as the first African American mayor of Gainesville in the 1870s.
Gainesville is home to the University of Florida, whose name was changed from the University of the State of Florida and simplified to University of Florida in 1909. It is the fourth-largest public university campus by enrollment in the United States as of the 2021–2022 academic year.
Gainesville heavily promoted solar power by creating the first feed-in tariff (FIT) in the United States. The FIT allowed small businesses and homeowners to supply electricity into the municipal power grid for pay.
